Basic Steps to Proper Denture Care

Clean, Natural-Looking DenturesIf you have dentures, you are aware that they require proper care to keep them clean and looking fresh. Caring for dentures takes no more time than caring for your natural teeth, but the routine is slightly different. Read below to make sure you are properly caring for your dentures.

Remove your dentures after eating, and rinse them off.

This is to ensure that particles and buildup don’t remain on your dentures, which can produce odor and staining. To prevent your dentures from breaking during the rinsing process, you can place a towel under them in case they fall.

Brush your natural teeth and/or gums after each meal

Using a soft bristled brush, clean your teeth, gums, tongue and palate to make sure you maintain a healthy mouth and to prevent decay, odor and keep the areas where the dentures attach from becoming irritated.

Brush your dentures at least once a day

Use a denture brush to remove any adhesive buildup. You should also pay special attention to remove food and plaque buildup, as well as any visible staining.

Soak your dentures while you sleep

Dentures usually need moisture to keep them from becoming misshapen. Ask your dentist to recommend a good solution for your dentures and follow the instructions carefully.

Rinse your dentures before wearing

After soaking your dentures in solution, you must rinse them well before returning them to your mouth. This will assure that the solution does not irritate your gums and the inside of your mouth.

In order to ensure that you have the proper fit and look for your dentures, make sure you schedule regular checkups with our well-known dentist in Studio City. We will make sure you’re doing a great job with cleaning and that there are no fractures or breaks in the denture, as well as check for proper fit. Ill-fitting dentures can create sores and lead to infection if not refitted.

Important Tips for Keeping Healthy Teeth for Life

Healthy Teeth - Studio City Dentist

We offer a number of services to help our patients improve and maintain their healthy smiles; but what patients can do for themselves is just as important. If you want a healthy mouth, follow these simple tips:

Brush Your Teeth

Brush regularly and as soon after eating as possible – even after snacking. Brushing keeps small food particles from becoming giant feasts for unwanted bacteria. Brush your tongue or use a tongue scraper — the tongue carries bacteria too.

Flossing further cleans and removes plaque where your toothbrush cannot reach. Floss at least once a day. This will also strengthen your gums over time, helping to prevent gingivitis and other problems. You may find it even brightens your teeth! If you don’t already floss regularly, try it for two weeks and see if it makes a difference.

Oral Irrigation

Oral Irrigation serves several purposes. It helps to remove food particles trapped below the gum line. It can also help remove biofilm, which harbors bacteria dangerous to your oral health.

Irrigate deep pockets with a cannula tip and good antimicrobial solution. This measure is one of the best things you can do on your own to help stop decay where pockets have formed between the tooth and gum. Remember, white teeth do not necessarily mean healthy teeth.

Stay Healthy

Nutrition is half the battle. The body is equipped to care for itself as long as conditions are right.  This means good nutrition, and your teeth and gums are no exception. Poor nutrition can cause the body to divert resources otherwise dedicated to oral health.

Visit the Dentist!

See your dental professionals regularly. If we haven’t seen you in over six months, give us a call!

Regardless of which dentist you visit, make sure your hygienist is allowed a good 45 minutes to an hour – enough time to properly work on your teeth. Listen to your hygienist when he or she tells you about a problem area, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Following these simple steps will help you get – and keep – that healthy, happy smile.

We’ll see you on your next visit!
