Choosing a Toothpaste

How to Choose a Toothpaste

Nowadays, when a person goes to their local supermarket for toothpaste they are faced with a disorienting variety of them. There are toothpastes that protect against cavities; toothpastes that control tartar; toothpastes that whiten the teeth; and even toothpastes for the elderly. There are no doubt toothpastes that do all of these things at once!

So…Which one is right for you?

Fluoride First

No matter what kind of toothpaste you choose, it’s important to pick one that has fluoride. Fluoride protects the teeth from the acid produced by bacteria that feed on the carbohydrates left on the teeth after a meal. It does this by supporting the enamel that covers the tooth. Fluoride even halts the processes of decay once it’s begun.

Choose Toothpaste That’s ADA Approved

The toothpaste you choose should have the seal of approval from the American Dental Association. This guarantees the toothpaste is safe and effective and contains fluoride.

Then, Suit Yourself

Provided the toothpaste has fluoride and is ADA approved, the rest is up to you and your personal taste. You can choose a toothpaste that focuses on controlling tartar, which is the build-up of hard, bacteria-caused plaque on the teeth.

Other types of toothpaste can help to dampen the pain signals from teeth that are overly sensitive to hot or cold beverages or foods.

Others still help whiten the teeth, sometimes with a combination of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide mixed in with the toothpaste formula.

Other toothpastes are formulated to fight gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to the point where the person is at risk for tooth loss, even if the tooth is otherwise healthy.

Our smiles may be our very best feature. Any dentist would agree. And anything about your smile that keeps you from smiling is unacceptable!

Bridges

Dental bridges fill the holes made by missing teeth. The bridge holds a false tooth in place using two or more crowns that anchor to the teeth on either side of the gap.

Veneers

Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain or plastic that are bonded to the front teeth to improve their color or appearance. Veneers are used to hide chips or uneven surfaces or to correct crookedness or disparate shapes.

Dental Implants

Dental implants replace the root of a tooth. They use special titanium screws that fuse with the jawbone to secure crowns in place in the mouth, effectively repairing or replacing lost teeth.

Crowns

Crowns are the part of the tooth that shows in the mouth. Cosmetic crowns, or caps, cover a tooth to restore its natural form and function.

Bonding

Bonding uses a tooth-colored bonded composite resin to close gaps, repair chips, correct coloring, or fill cavities. Bonding can be completed in one office visit and lasts several years.
