Caring for Your Mouth After a Tooth Extraction

caring-for-your-mouth-after-a-tooth-extraction

A tooth extraction is a fancy term for having a tooth removed by an experienced dentist. After an extraction, there are things you should do at home to ensure your mouth and gums stay healthy. Here are some tips on what to do after a dental extraction in Studio City.

Control the Bleeding

It’s not uncommon for the site to bleed a little after the procedure and throughout the first day. Your dentist will help you control bleeding by placing a piece of gauze on the site and telling you to bite down firmly. This will help to form a blood clot within the tooth socket. Continue to do this at home if bleeding continues. If you bleed beyond the first day, call your dentist.

Take Pain Medication

If you have pain or discomfort, take OTC pain medications or prescribed medicines as directed by your dentist. While on prescription meds, refrain from driving because they can make you drowsy.

Reduce Swelling

Place an ice pack on the cheek of your extraction site for 10 minutes on then five minutes off. Repeat as necessary. Bruising is normal after a tooth extraction so don’t be alarmed. It should go away naturally.

Get Your ZZZs

Don’t plan any activities for the first 24 hours after the procedure. Instead, take this time to rest and get quality sleep to help with the healing process. Elevate your head slightly when resting on the couch or in bed.

Do These Things

Check out these do’s when it comes to taking care of your mouth after an extraction.

DO:

  • Eat soft, healthy foods and drink lots of liquids.
  • Keep brushing your teeth, but gently. Don’t brush around the extraction site and don’t use toothpaste. Rinsing can dislodge blood clots, so you want to avoid this.
  • Keep the site clean. About 12 hours post-procedure, you can swish and rinse gently, four times a day. Use a mixture of one teaspoon salt in an eight-ounce glass of water.

Don’ts

Here’s what NOT to do when caring for your mouth after an extraction.

DON’T:

  • Drink with a straw, as the sucking motion could dislodge a blood clot.
  • Drink hot liquids, which can make your mouth swell more. Don’t drink alcohol, as this will slow the healing process.
  • Smoke, which could break down any formed blood clots, leading to a painful dry socket.

When to Call Your Dentist

Normal healing should take place after a tooth extraction, and you should not hesitate to call your dentist with questions or concerns. In addition, you should call your dentist if:

  • The pain gets more severe the day after the procedure.
  • Bleeding gets harder to control.
  • Swelling worsens.
  • You experience itching or rashes after taking medicine.
