Common Dental Conditions in Adults

common-dental-conditions-in-adults

As we age, our oral health often becomes more challenging. Failure to stay on top of issues that arise can lead to unwanted (and expensive) complications. We all know how imperative good dental care is for kids and teens. But it’s even more so for adults because our health depends on it.

Check out these conditions unique to adults when it comes to oral health. Many of them can be helped with cosmetic dentistry.

  1. Oral cancer: According to the CDC, older adults are at a much higher risk for cancers of the mouth, including oral and pharyngeal cancers, with a median diagnosis age of 62. Men over the age of 40 are at the greatest risk, due primarily to the use of tobacco products and alcohol. Because oral cancer is largely detected through routine dental visits, it is important to stay on top of your six-month cleanings.
  2. Gum disease: The best way to combat gum disease is to brush and floss regularly. If you let this routine go, you are at increased risk for a buildup of bacterial plaque and tartar that can cause irreparable damage to your jawbone and supporting structures. If not addressed, this can eventually lead to tooth loss. The CDC reports that about two in three (68 percent) of adults over 65 have gum disease. Gum disease treatment, also known as scaling or root planing, may be necessary.
  3. Yellow teeth: As we age, the environmental effects of what we eat and drink show up on our teeth. You may notice your teeth are yellowing or browning. This can be caused by a number of factors, such as food, wine, coffee, tea, and smoking, just to name a few. Fortunately, in-office tooth whitening can brighten your teeth between three and eight shades.
  4. Missing teeth: With age comes the higher risk of tooth loss. Over time, your teeth become less sensitive so you may not feel pain related to decay or gum disease as readily. Losing a tooth or multiple teeth can impact your self-confidence as well as your ability to chew and speak properly. Implants or dentures can be the solution to replace those missing teeth and restoring self-confidence and proper functioning.
  5. Dental filling breakdowns: Cavity fillings don’t last forever. While a few may last up to 20 years, most generally last between 8 and 10 years. When those fillings begin to break down, they allow food and bacteria to get inside the tooth, causing decay inside the root and requiring a root canal. If not promptly addressed, this can lead to tooth loss.
