May is National Dental Care Month

may-is-national-dental-care-month-2

We know many of you have not been able to get to the dentist due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This is all the more reason to keep up your home dental care routine. May is National Dental Care Month, so this is a great time to remind everyone how important regular oral hygiene is.

Oral hygiene is learned at an early age. If you teach your kids good habits, they will retain them for a lifetime. Here are the four best things you can do for your teeth: (1) brush twice a day, (2) floss once a day, (3) limit sugary snacks, and (4) see the dentist twice yearly. A healthy smile takes dedicated, continued healthy habits. When you maintain those habits, you reduce not only the risks of infections and cavities, but the costs that come with long-term dental repairs as well.

20 Tips for Oral Hygiene

Here is a list of 20 tips for dental hygiene in Studio City.

  1. Brush teeth thoroughly with fluoride toothpaste.
  2. Visit your dentist for a cleaning twice annually. This applies even to those who no longer have natural teeth or who have dentures.
  3. Refrain from using tobacco products. If you do use tobacco products, such as smoking cigarettes, quit now.
  4. Limit your intake of alcoholic drinks.
  5. Keep your diabetes in check, so you can cut your risk of other complications like gum disease.
  6. Get a different medication from your doctor if the one you’re on gives you dry mouth. To combat dry mouth, drink a lot of water, chew sugarless gum, and avoid alcohol and smoking.
  7. Drink fluoridated water.
  8. Make an appointment with your doctor or a dentist if you suddenly notice a change in smell or taste.
  9. Assist kids and senior citizens to brush and floss their teeth if you are a caregiver.
  10. Brush at least twice a day.
  11. Keep sugary foods at bay. Have them only once in a while as a treat.
  12. Brush long enough, best between two and three minutes.
  13. Wear a helmet or mouth guard when participating in sports; this will safeguard your teeth.
  14. Floss daily using a gentle sawing motion.
  15. Limit acidic drinks that erode tooth enamel, such as fruit juices and sodas.
  16. Get x-rays as recommended.
  17. See your dentist every six months without fail.
  18. Do not chew ice or use your teeth to rip open packages, crack nuts, or remove bottle tops to reduce your risk of chipping or cracking a tooth.
  19. Got a knocked-out tooth? Attempt to place the tooth back in the socket and then call for emergency dental care. If placing the tooth back in is impossible, wrap it in plastic or put it in a cup of milk, then get dental care ASAP.
  20. See your dentist between regular visits if you experience pain like a toothache or a problem like bleeding gums.
