Oral Health in Older Adults

oral-health-in-older-adults

Oral health is directly linked to overall physical health, which is why keeping on top of regular dental visits is crucial to ensure a healthy body. Seniors and the elderly are at an increased risk of health problems from untreated dental issues. Ignoring these issues can lead to preventable emergencies.

Many older adults assume they don’t have to be as diligent with their oral health. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Getting older brings more challenges for your whole body, including your teeth and mouth. Here are just a few reasons why good dental hygiene in Studio City is so important in the elderly:

  • Dry mouth: This is a common affliction in the elderly, but it’s more than just an annoyance. Many seniors take medications that drain their mouths of saliva. However, saliva is necessary to protect the teeth and prevent infections. When that saliva is no longer plentiful, gum disease and cavities can develop. Malnutrition can also result, as many seniors with dry mouth don’t want to eat.
  • Deadly infections: Letting cavities go untreated or ignoring a toothache can have dangerous consequences. Infection can set in, which can lead to pneumonia in the elderly, as well as heart disease, root decay, and gum disease. Make an appointment for yourself or your elderly loved one if you experience swelling, redness, or pain in the mouth.
  • Risk of disease: Failure to take care of your teeth can lead to elevated blood sugar levels, which can result in diabetes. An infection in the mouth is especially dangerous, as it can easily carry bacteria to your lungs or heart.
  • Oral cancer: The first red flag for oral cancer is a sore in the mouth that doesn’t seem to heal. You are at greater risk for this if you smoke or chew tobacco. Early detection is imperative for survival.
  • Gum disease: About 25 percent of older adults between the ages of 65 and 74 have severe gum disease. Not only does this condition alone threaten health, it can spread disease to other parts of the body.
  • Hypertension: Infection raises the blood pressure. Keep on top of regular dental hygiene to stop infections before they begin. Keep in touch with your primary care doctor to ensure your blood pressure medication is set at the right dose.

If you have a dental issue that needs to be addressed, head to your dentist right away before it spirals out of control. Stay on top of your senior loved ones to ensure they are seeing their dentist every six months too.
