Traveling? Six Tips for Maintaining Healthy Teeth While on the Go

traveling-six-tips-for-maintaining-healthy-teeth-while-on-the-go

Vacations can be lots of fun, as you take in new locales, meet new people, get some sun, learn about local customs, and try new foods. Whether you’re heading to the beach, the mountains, camping or somewhere tropical, there’s nothing better than a much-earned vacation. But taking time off from work and school doesn’t mean you should forget about your oral health.

When you’re packing your bags, make it a priority to include all of the important things you’ll need to maintain your healthy smile. If you skip your brushing and flossing routine even for just a day or two, cavities and other problems can start to creep up. Don’t let all of your hard work go to waste.

Check out these easy tips for maintaining healthy teeth while on the road:

  1. Book a cleaning with the dentist before you go on your trip to ensure any problems or potential issues are identified and addressed. This way, you can travel with clean teeth and a healthy attitude.
  2. Pack a small bag or pouch with all of your oral hygiene tools, such as one toothbrush and one spare, travel tube of toothpaste, floss and mouthwash. To keep your toothbrush from attracting bacteria, use a plastic protector with ventilation holes. If you wear a retainer, give it a good cleaning prior to the trip and pack it in its case. Got braces? Don’t forget to bring some spare wax in case a wire comes loose and pokes you.
  3. Bring a spare toothbrush and floss on the plane. This way, if your luggage gets lost, at least you will have the basics to keep you going and you don’t have to sacrifice your oral health until your luggage is located.
  4. Make wise food choices. Stay away from sticky snacks and hard candies to guard against the risk of dental emergencies while traveling.
  5. Drink lots of water. Be sure to hydrate at all times, whether you’re taking a road trip or boarding a plane. If you can’t brush after eating, you can at least swish the water around your mouth to loosen food particles. Chew sugar-free gum after meals and avoid soda or high-sugar juices. Once you’ve arrived at your destination, inquire about the safety of the tap water. If it’s not safe, don’t brush with it. Instead, use bottled water so you don’t get a stomach bug and ruin your trip.
  6. Make sure your kids know all the above guidelines. Do as you say so they can follow good behavior. Educate them on the benefits of eating only healthy snacks and drinks, especially when traveling, as it’s very tempting to throw your good oral hygiene out the window on vacation. Encourage them to keep up with their regular brushing and flossing routine too.

And if you have been noticing yellowing teeth, get teeth whitening in Studio City from your trusted dentist beforehand, to ensure you bring your best smile with you on your trip.

Keeping up with your routine while on vacation is vital to your overall oral health and wellbeing. For more tips, or to schedule your dental cleaning, call Studio City Dental Center at 818-762-2977.
