Ways to Soothe Dental Anxiety

ways-to-soothe-dental-anxiety

Some patients may be anxious before a dental visit. But it’s important not to let anxiety prevent you from getting the treatment you need, including your twice-yearly cleanings, which are critical to maintaining good dental hygiene.

Here are some quick tips to calm your nerves before your next dentist visit.

  1. Share your fears with your dentist or hygienist. It’s important to be transparent about your fears. This way your dentist or hygienist can discuss your procedure with you. Being informed is the best way to quell any fears you may have.
  2. Plan ahead. Be sure to book your appointment on a day where you’re not too busy or feel rushed to get somewhere right afterwards. This gives your body ample time to relax.
  3. Keep an eye on your food and water intake. Before your scheduled appointment, stay away from foods containing a lot of sugar or caffeine because these may make you more jittery. Try something with a calming effect, such as caffeine-free tea.
  4. Practice deep breathing techniques. Remember to breathe. This will help you to stay calm both before and during your visit.
  5. Visit your dentist regularly; don’t skip or prolong appointments. Make a commitment to yourself to schedule – and keep – dental appointments every six months or whenever you have an issue. Procrastinating can be harmful to good dental health and can exacerbate dental problems.
  6. Consider additional medication. Some dentists offer conscious sedation such as nitrous oxide to those who feel anxious. This is a safe way to relax and cut back on nervousness.

Keep in mind that dental anxiety is nothing to be embarrassed about. Speak with your dental team ahead of time so they can offer solutions to help ease your anxiety. Don’t let your anxiety keep you from seeking proper treatment. Doing so can lead to deteriorating oral health over time. If you have been putting off a visit to the dentist, make an appointment today and work with your dental team to ensure you receive the care you need.
