Chances are most of us have, or will have, a cavity in our lifetimes. If you’ve never had a filling, you may have questions about the process. Will it hurt? How long will it take? What types of fillings are there? Here’s what to expect when getting a filling in Studio City.
First, know you’re not alone. Cavities are extremely common. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, 92 percent of adults in this country have a dental cavity.
The standard treatment for a dental cavity is to have it filled, which involves the replacement of decayed tooth material with a material made from composite resin, amalgam, or ceramics. Getting a filling is a low-risk, straightforward procedure. Your dentist will let you know if you have a cavity during one of your regular dental exams twice a year. If you experience pain in between your regular visits, contact your dentist.
Your dentist will administer an anesthetic to numb the area. After waiting a few minutes for the anesthetic to take effect, the dentist will begin.
Your dentist will use an instrument to take out the decayed portion of your tooth. After the decay is removed, the area is cleaned out thoroughly.
Next, the filling is applied to fill the area. The two main types of filings are composite resin, which resembles the color of the tooth, or amalgam, which is a combination of many metals. After the material is inserted, the dentist will harden it using a special light. Any excess filling is then trimmed and the tooth is polished. The dentist will make sure you can bite down properly and that everything matches up.
From start to finish, a filling takes just about 15 to 20 minutes. You’ll be given instructions on what to do when leaving the office. Keep in mind, you may remain numb for a few hours after the procedure. This is completely normal. Try not to chew on the numb area or eat hot foods until the numbness wears off.
Your filled tooth may be sensitive to heat or cold for a few days after the procedure, with sensitivity gradually reducing over time.
